Cannes & Grasse: Perfumes, Promenades, and Daydreams

Cannes is world-renowned for its glitz and glam—thanks to the famous film festival—but our day trip wasn’t about celebrity spotting. After a leisurely walk through the old city, we boarded a bus to Grasse, a historic town known as the perfume capital of the world. Although we didn’t have much time in Grasse due to our tour schedule, the scent of the day lingered with us long after we left. From cobblestone streets to fragrances that tell stories, here’s how we spent our day exploring Cannes and Grasse.

Walking the Streets of Cannes

Cannes greeted us with warm sunshine and the unmistakable Mediterranean charm that defines the French Riviera. I started the day with a light jacket on but was quickly able to remove it and enjoy the perfect June weather.

Our walking tour started in the old city, known as Le Suquet. This hilly area offers incredible views of Cannes' harbour, where luxury yachts are moored alongside small fishing boats. The narrow streets of Le Suquet wind past old buildings, giving you a glimpse into what Cannes was like before it became synonymous with Hollywood glamour.

As we ascended the hill, we reached the Church of Our Lady of Hope, a stunning 17th-century church that overlooks the city. The views from here were breathtaking—the perfect blend of sky, sea, and the tiled rooftops of Cannes below.

A Whirlwind in Grasse: The Perfume Capital

After a brief stroll through Cannes, it was time for the highlight of the day: a visit to Grasse. Known for its perfume-making industry, Grasse has been the heart of fragrance production since the 16th century. The town is located in the hills above the Riviera, and its idyllic setting only adds to its allure.

Our tour took us to the Fragonard Perfume Factory, where we were given a behind-the-scenes look at the perfume-making process. Fragonard is one of the oldest perfumeries in Grasse, established in 1926, and continues to create exquisite fragrances using traditional methods.

We learned how the local flowers—such as jasmine, rose, and lavender—are harvested and distilled to create the base notes of some of the world’s most famous perfumes. Despite being rushed through the tour (thanks to a late bus), we managed to get a glimpse into this fascinating world.

The town’s unique microclimate makes it perfect for growing the flowers used in perfume, and its expertise in distillation has been passed down through generations. Even today, Grasse is home to some of the most prestigious perfume houses in the world.

Day Trips from Cannes: Grasse and Beyond

While Cannes is a beautiful destination in its own right, its location makes it the perfect jumping-off point for day trips to nearby gems like Grasse. If you’re planning a visit to Cannes, I highly recommend taking a day to explore Grasse and its rich perfume history.

You could also explore other nearby towns like Antibes, known for its art galleries and historic fortifications, or head inland to the perched villages that dot the Provence countryside. Whether you're after a cultural experience or just want to take in the beauty of the French Riviera, there’s no shortage of incredible day trips you can take from Cannes.

A Day Full of Memories

Our day in Cannes and Grasse was the perfect blend of relaxation, history, and sensory delight. From the charming streets of Cannes' old city to the fragrant air of Grasse, we packed a lot into our short time there. While I wish we’d had more time to linger in Grasse and explore more of the perfume-making process, I left with a newfound appreciation for the artistry that goes into creating a bottle of perfume.

Cannes, with its combination of old-world charm and modern luxury, also left a lasting impression. Whether you’re a film buff, a history lover, or simply looking for a relaxing day by the sea, Cannes and its surroundings have something for everyone.
